Gonorrhea Symptoms


Symptoms of gonorrhea usually appear 2-5 days after infection. However in men, symptoms may take up to a month to appear. Some people do not have any symptoms. They may be completely unaware that they have caught the disease, and therefore do not seek treatment. Half of women with gonorrhea are asymptomatic while others have vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain or pain with intercourse. Most men who are infected have symptoms such as urethritis associated with burning with urination and discharge from penis.

Here are several symptoms if you get this disease.

For men:

  • burning and pain while urinating
  • increased urinary frequency or urgency
  • discharge from he penis (white, yellow, or green in color)
  • red or swollen opening of penis (urethra)
  • tender or swollen testicles
  • sore throat (gonococcal pharyngitis)

As for women:

  • vaginal discharge
  • burning and pain while urinating
  • increased urination
  • sore throat
  • painful sexual intercourse
  • severe pain in lower abdomen (if the infection spreads to the fallopian tubes and stomach area)
  • fever (if the infection spreads to the fallopian tubes and stomach area)

Gonorrhea which affects other parts of body:

  • rectum: anal itching
  • eyes: eye-pain, sensitivity to light, pus-like discharge from one or both eyes
  • throat: sore throat, lymph nodes in the neck
  • joints: warm and red, swollen, extremely painful especially when you move the affected joints

But keep it in mind that there’s only several people who have those symptoms. Still, you need to get the test from your doctor, making sure that you’re fine and safe enough to not affected other people.
