Know The Symptoms of Food Allergies

For some people, even celebrities, food allergies cause only discomfort feeling. But for several others, allergic to some kind of food can be life-threatening, also called as anaphylaxis. Food allergies can occur if your immune system react after you eat a certain food, even for a very small amount, this is because your body thinks that those foods are trying to harm you. Allergy tends to run in families, so if other people on your family have allergies like hay fever, asthma, or eczema, you are more likely to have a food allergy.

Food allergies are more common in children than adults. Around 6 to 8% of children under age of 5 have food allergies, while for adults is only 3 to 4%. A food allergy can disappear as the children get older, although there are no medicine to cure food allergies.

Food that can cause allergy is called allergen, and it is usually the protein in food that causes the problem. Some food allergens are eggs, milk, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shrimp, and shellfish.

You may have food allergies if you experienced these problems after eating certain foods, also known as food allergies symptoms:
1. Tingling or itching in the mouth
2. Swelling in body parts like lips, face, tongue, throat, or other part
3. Wheezing, nasal congestion, stuffy nose, or trouble breathing
4. Stomach cramp, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
5. Dizziness or fainting
6. Itchy skin with red, raised bumps

Some people who experienced anaphylaxis (a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction) can have symptoms as follows:
1. Tightening of airways
2. Swollen throat that makes you difficult to breathe
3. Shock, with a severe drop in blood pressure
4. Rapid pulse
5. Dizziness or loss of consciousness
