Insomnia, Harmful Disease Or Not?

You must be ever heard thus part of Insomnia lyrics by Craig David, right? Well, what is Insomnia actually? Is it a harmful disease or not? What causes it anyway? Is there any symptoms to know it? Insomnia is most often defined by an individual’s report of sleeping difficulties. It is the perception or complaint of inadequate or poor-quality sleep because of one more of such as waking up during the night with difficulty returning to sleep, waking up to early in the morning, and unrefreshed sleep. It is a symptoms for several medical, psychiatric and sleeping disorders. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake due to the lack of sleep.

Insomnia can be classified as transient (short term), acute, chronic (constant), and Fatal familial insomnia. Transient insomnia can last from few days and to week. It can be caused by other disorders including severe depression, stress or changes in sleep environment. Acute insomnia is the incapability to sleep well consistently for a period of three weeks to as long as six months. Chronic insomnia has the longest span and can last for years at a time. It is generally caused by other disorder, but can be a primary disorder as well. Fatal familial insomnia. Fatal familial insomnia, or FFI, is a very rare inherited disease of the brain. The dominant gene responsible for FFI has been found in just 28 families worldwide. If only one parent has the gene, the offspring have a 50% chance of inheriting it and developing the disease.

Insomnia is found in males and females of all age groups, although it seems to be more common in females (especially after menopause) and in the elderly. The ability to sleep, rather than the need for sleep, appears to decreases with advancing age.

Insomnia is not defined by the number of hours of sleep a person gets or how long it takes to fall asleep. Individuals vary normally  in their need for and their satisfaction with sleep. Insomnia may cause problems during the day and there are some symptoms of insomnia. You can do some preventions avoid insomnia and treatment  for it.
